The Body & The Archive

Exciting new exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery

1 November - 15 December 2012

Selected artists, Seung Jae Shin, Anita Ponton and Collectress take a range of responses to the archive of Martina Bergman Österberg (1849-1915), a pioneering educationalist and an early supporter of women's suffrage, who taught at one of the founding colleges of the University of Greenwich: Dartford College of Physical Education.

The archive documents her radical and influential approach to the teaching and promotion of sport for women and the achievements of the women who followed her.  In a variety of media, including performance, painting and sound, the artists not only seek to explore the subject of the body as it presents within the archive, but also the body of the researcher as it engages with the archive.

The Gallery is grateful to Rosemary Moon and the Bergman Österberg Union for their advice and support.

This exhibition coincides with a one-day conference, "Performing the Collection", held at the National Maritime Museum on 9 November.

Exhibition curated by: David Waterworth.
Private View: Friday November 9, 6-8pm
Opening Times: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm; Sat 11am -4pm

Memorial Stone Unveiled

At the BÖU Annual General Meeting and Reunion on 8th September 2012, a memorial stone was unveiled commemorating our founder, Martina Bergman Österberg.  The memorial stone has been placed under "Madame's Tree" between Kingsfield House and the Cricket Pitch.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by a large group of BÖU members and friends, with speeches from Anne Stuart (BÖU Chairman); Helena Reitberger (Swedish Embassy First Secretary); Councillor Ann Allen
(Mayor of Dartford).

Save to Save the BÖU Archive

At the BÖU Reunion on September 8th 2012, members and friends were given collection boxes to take home and fill with loose change.  Money raised from the collection boxes will be  paid into the BÖU Archive fund.

The preservation and storage of archives in acid free materials is a costly project and the BÖU Archive is supported by donations. If you would like to receive a collecting box
so that you can help to save the BÖU Archive, please e-mail the BÖU archivist

Österberg Sports Centre

The new sports centre at North West Kent College in Dartford, Kent, has been named the Österberg Sports Centre.  The centre was officially opened in October 2011 by Olympic and Commonwealth medallist, Christopher Cook.

The Österberg Sports Centre has an eight-court sports hall, indoor cricket nets, a fully equipped gym, fitness testing equipment and ‘state of the art’ teaching facilities.  The building has been designed to maximize energy efficiency, including solar panels for heating and a roof designed to make best use of natural light without glare.

Bergman Österberg Union members are thrilled that Madame Österberg has been honoured by this excellent facility being named the Österberg Sports Centre.   Sports Centre staff are keen to make Centre users aware of Madame’s pioneering work and have provided the BÖU Archive with information boards in the Reception area.  At present the information boards are being used to display photographs and information sheets illustrating Madame Österberg's work.
